Essence Press primarily publishes works by Julie Johnstone. Works and installations by Julie Johnstone concern perception, distillation, and contemplative experience. Her artists' books are held in several collections including at Tate Library, National Art Library (V&A), Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, University College London, Winchester School of Art, Glasgow School of Art, Centre for Fine Print Research University of West of England, Bibliotheque Francais, Yale Center for British Art, Stirling University, Saison Poetry Library, Scottish Poetry Library, and in private collections.

Essence Press occasionally publishes the work of other poets and artists, most recently Maria White, Richard Price, Alan Spence, Thomas A Clark, Hamish Whyte, Alec Finlay and Gerry Cambridge. It also publishes less, a minimal journal of minimalist art and text pieces. Essence Press previously published the journal island.
